by DEBORAH CLAIRE PROCTER Two songs, one saxophone quartet, an album of piano, a quintet (sax tenor and alto, two cellos, bass clarinet, double bass) - all compositions of Oscar Edelstein, all with musicians with whom he has collaborated for many years including me as a vocalist, and others like saxophonist Martin Proscia with whom many times we have performed a live trio of voice, saxophone and piano; Soko Rodrigo who has performed as a guest artist with the Edelstein's Ensamble Nacional del Sur; and Edgardo Palotta who has worked as the musical director on various operas composed by Edelstein. Comparisons in music are always a dis-service however in the past there have been one's made such as to the likes of Charles Ives, Varese, Zappa... Think poly-rhythms, landscape, texture, atmosphere, expressive, poetic... Big shout out to the amazing sound engineer Ricardo Sanz from Soundrec in Buenos Aires, and to artist Elly Baltus at Patina Publishing (Amsterdam) for her constantly inspiring vision, friendship and support. ======== All tracks now live and available in Bandcamp: 🎧🎧 Edelstein possesses a formidable pianistic technique. Rivers & Mirrors is essentially a theatrical experience, with sound & images created - live & recorded - as a response to the images & ideas behind the poem, El Rio by Ortiz. The interaction of live & recorded performance is very effectively achieved & the timing impeccable. The piano soundscape is quasi-orchestral & quite striking..The wordless vocals are brought in gradually & become inseparable from the images. There's an intensity to the work that rarely loses its edge. Ray Picot, Iberian & Latin American Music Society The Río event left a strong impression in my memory. It's one of those rare performances in which you feel that something has been added to your life, some new insight, a different kind of association, or the sheer pleasure of having great music, images & poetry combined in a subtle way. Edelstein ́s piano playing & improvisations are really quite extraordinary. I've heard many live piano recitals & his abilities do stand out. Gloria Carnevali (ex Director Bolivar Hall, London) Taking inspiration from myriad genres, the composer- cum-director-cum-pianist is one of the most innovative musicians around. Her intervention [...] was simply dazzling for the technical solvency in the range and her versatility in having intervened in a work that demands superlative competences in order to translate the complex interior world that it expresses. Marín, El Diario ...this strange dialect that the beautiful voice of Procter articulates, that seems to border on an articulated language, with the effect of the almost figurative swarming of these tiny words, more than with Pollock, the music of the ENS seems to connect with certain landscapes of the artist Eduardo Stupía. Monjeau, Clarín ...the formidable Welsh singer Procter (her voice acting as an instrument) ...the ensemble sees an incredible intervention of Procter, a singer that's a kind of lucky cross between Cathy Berberian and the free jazz vocalist Lauren Newton. Garcia, El Amante
