MASTERCLASSES IN COMPOSITION
Acoustic Theatre: Musical Composition of the Space
Laboratory with composer Oscar Edelstein (Argentina) Theatre… Word… Plan… Gesture... Image... Memory… Oscar Edelstein discussed his theories for composition that are useful for all creative artists and not just composers. The seminar is based on a post-graduate course that he taught at the Universidad de Quilmes which proved very popular. |
I begin this seminar by talking about the words I use to think - because there is a kind of prudence in the rational academic world to which I am not going to adhere – and the representation you make of your materials gives new possibilities to do and create.
Oscar Edelstein
Edelstein explores in the seminar the creation of the sensation of perspective vital to artists, musicians, composers, architects, choreographers, philosophers, directors, or writers who wish to consider the composition and perception of space as a component of their creative work. Examples are used from Edelstein's own works for orchestra, opera, ensemble, and his ideas for an architecture designed especially for musical works with the “Sonic Crystal Room" and from important thinkers in history.
From the acoustic experiments of the Venetian masters to the 3D space of Stockhausen and passing through Schónberg, Ligetti & Nono, Edelstein takes into consideration the ways to bring into play the imaginary, literary, and philosophical configurations and generation of the sense of space.
Participants learn about the new theory and practice of Edelstein's theory of "Acoustic Theatre" - to think, to notate, to create – new tools, theories and techniques of the space in music, theatre and performance.

Edelstein, or it’s better to say his music, is a rare bird in the world of so-called contemporary music. He shares with it the use of certain techniques & the concern of sound as material. But he often ventures into areas of a visceral quality that many of his colleagues avoid with discretion. “Studies for the Acoustic Grid” works like an unpredictable journey around a kind of sonorous poetry that neither pushes aside violence nor the maximum subtlety. From the most tenuous & crystalline, up to the real explosion, it's a fundamental disc, for its importance and originality but, especially, for its power of communication. |
OSCAR EDELSTEIN is an original contemporary composer from Argentina. Known for his creativity and inventiveness, he is frequently described as ‘leading' Latin America's avant-garde’. He is a pianist, conductor, Senior Professor of Composition (Acoustic & Electro-Acoustic), and director of an award-winning research programme, “Acoustic Theatre" at the University of Quilmes (Buenos Aires).
His recent work "Cristal Argento I" for full orchestra and electronic processes was premiered by Basel Sinfonietta. In his compositions Edelstein frequently explores the interplay between music and theatre, where voice and speech interplay with music and technology. He has a close connection to theatre and dance having made music for the theatre of Argentina’s most important directors such as Roberto Villanueva, and writers such as Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill. He has made many post graduate masterclasses in places like Manhattan School of Music, Royal College of Music, Guildhall, Birmingham Conservatoire; Royal Northern College of Music & Drama, University of Music & Performing Arts, Vienna and so on. |
ScheduleEdelstein regularly leads masterclasses, seminars, talks, one to one composer sessions and workshops around the world.

One of the most interesting composers of the intermediate generation... [with an] obsession for complex sonorous textures and a careful control of the form... if something defines the musical production of Edelstein it is the monumental and complex character of his discourse The multiplicity of readings and approaches that his work permits means that the mere description of their components only partially reflect his sonorous universe. Rhythmical - multilayered sound fields develop like waves. Edelstein’s close woven music, continuing the tradition of Varèse, has a force which goes under the skin with a great vitality. |
